Summer Camp - Fun But Cheap!

Here is a list of summer camps that I have found (or others have suggested) that won't break the bank, but will still give your kids a great time this summer!

SOUTHERN FOOD AND BEVERAGE MUSEUM  (Riverwalk, New Orleans)

Kids Culinary Camp is a free half-day summer camp that gets kids in the kitchen learning cooking in a way that’s hands-on and fun. Each day there’s a new recipe and campers work together measuring, chopping, stirring, and everything else to create a delicious lunch to enjoy with each other. They’ll be staying active with physical activities and fun nutrition lessons and art projects. By the end of the week each camper will have a cookbook they created so they can keep making healthy dishes at home!

COST: FREE!
  • Who: Rising 2nd-5th graders (no exceptions) - means completed 1st grade!
  • When: June 10- July 19, no camp the week of 4th of July
    • Monday-Friday 9:00am – noon, with a free lunch included!
  • Because of the popularity of camp in past years, each child may only attend ONE WEEK of camp to ensure that as many youth as possible have the opportunity to participate.
  • Where: This year camp will be held at First Grace Church (3401 Canal Street at Jefferson Davis Parkway) because the Southern Food & Beverage Museum’s new building is under construction.
  • Registration: Part 1 Opens Wednesday May 15th and is completed online at southernfood.org
For more information: contact Lucy at 504-569-0405 or camp@southernfood.org

NOTE: My son went last year and LOVED IT!  He is a picky eater so he didn't like to eat everything they made, but he learned a lot and wants to go back this year!

There are also mini camps (1 week) that vary in fees and times.

As a side note, check out the Gymnastics ($40 for 2 1/2 months) or Karate ($55 for 3 1/2 months) - The Barbre Gym is located near Rivertown - it is a COOL facility (I went to the free self defense classes there for women only - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) but the gym equipment is nice  - I am def signing my kids up for the fall!   Non-Kenner residents welcome.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

VBS is a great resource for the summer - especially since many are FREE or very low cost!  Most are half day (9-12 usually) but some are full day programs.

I  am working on updating my spreadsheet of all the VBS around Metairie/Kenner area - my kids have attended many of them over the years!

I can't figure out how to upload the file on the blog, but if you email tiffsdealsnola@gmail.com or send a message thru the facebook pageI can send the excel spreadsheet list to you when it's complete!
